Think of it another way. If you have two kids, it is highly probable that one of them will be beaten while at school.
I don’t know whether the numbers looked at all strata of society and whether the percentage represents number of school going children beaten every school-year or number of children beaten over the course of their school going years.
I don’t think I care. These numbers are terrible in either event.

Well – beating is commonplace in all schools (atleast in India)… and I must say the numbers are really really high
I feel when you beat a student, the teacher is admitting to failing to be able to teach the student – so shouldnt the teacher be the one to be actually beaten…
People only speak out but no one take initiative to stop this practice in schools. Even in many homes, beating / giving burns is regularly used as punishment even by mothers. How such parents can blaim teachers then ? Many parents rather wants teachers to use all methods but to see that their kids do well in school. Poor kids. Govt.only makes laws but no concrete steps of implementation. One of my relative who is a teacher in a munciple primary school informed me she daily see slapping red marks on faces of many kids which were given at home. Beating by rulers and canes is also common. It is really required to start a huge nationwide campaign against beating children.
Santosh: I hope the situation improves post the ban on corporal punishment thought one still cant stop what happens at homes. Did you read the story about the Hyderabad school where children were electrocuted? Its shocking.
There is a divide in our schools. In several urban private schools, the helicopter parents rush to the school for the slightest cause and would be up in arms against teachers who slapped children. On the other side, in schools attended by the middle-class, several striver parents, expecting success for their children do not admonish (some even encourage) students being caned- as they see it as a achool-knows-best-route to academic achievement.
